About the Principal

Mrs. Lana L.P. Murray is the principal of Dr. Ulysses S. Wiggins College Preparatory Lab Family School, located in the Bergen Square neighborhood of Camden. The Dr. Ulysses S. Wiggins College Preparatory Lab Family School (WCPLFS) serves students in grades Pre-Kindergarten-8. WCPLFS’s mission is to ensure that every student develops the academic identity, routines, expectations, and social supports that will enable him or her to leave the school ready for the academic challenges of high school, and prepare them to be career and college ready. Under her leadership, the school maintains a high standard of educational experiences and expectations for staff, students, and parents in an effort to maximize student learning and build an educational foundation that will ensure student success.

Principal Murray has served as principal of WCPLFS since August 2010. She previously worked as the principal of the George Washington Elementary School, and before that as the vice principal of Ulysses S. Wiggins School and Riletta Twyne Cream Family School. Principal Murray began her education career as a pre-school teacher/director for the YMCA, and then as a first-grade teacher, and finally as a 6th-grade math teacher. Before becoming an educator, Principal Murray worked as a chief legislative assistant in the U.S. House of Representatives in Washington, D.C., and as the Tax Policy Executive for the Virginia Department of Taxation under Governor Douglas Wilder, the first Africa-American governor of Virginia and of any state since Reconstruction.

Principal Murray has a Bachelor’s degree from Howard University and a Master’s degree from Rutgers University-Camden. Principal Murray is a native of Meridian, Mississippi, and graduated from Meridian High School. She is married to William L. Murray, Jr., and they have three children.

"The question is not, 'Is it possible to educate all children well?', but rather, 'Do we want it badly enough?'"
